Our History

For over 25 years, IT departments around the world have been relying on rapid software solutions from Speedware Corporation. Founded in 1976, Speedware has focused on developing solid core technologies that help businesses, governments, healthcare facilities and educational institutions improve the performance and productivity of their IT operations. In addition, Speedware has acquired and developed businesses that complement its own offerings. For over a quarter of a century, innovation, development and evolution have been the driving forces behind Speedware's longevity and continued success.

  • In the eighties, Speedware's enterprise application development technology helped businesses to automate and streamline their IT operations.

  • In the nineties, Speedware pioneered Web application development with the release of Speedware Autobahn, and acquired its Business Intelligence flagship products, Media and Esperant.

  • In the year 2000, Speedware created MobileDev, the first enterprise wireless application development tool in the world.

Speedware Timeline

1976

Established under the name Info-Boutique and later Infocentre, the company begins as a turnkey application software company in Montreal. Co-founders Jean-Pierre Théorêt and Ian Farquharson specialize in developing software systems for travel wholesalers.

1980

The company creates Genasys, the first incarnation of Speedware/4GL, to speed the development of new business application systems. BASF becomes the first client of this new application development technology.

1983

Driven by the success of the rapidly growing 4GL market, the first version of Reactor sees the light of day. Reactor is an application development language that includes a reporting module and the second generation of the company's 4GL technology. The first version of Designer, Speedware's development CASE tool, is created.

1987

Version 5.0 of Reactor is released, rounding off Speedware's 4GL functionality and furthering its ability to meet the needs of business application development.

1990

Speedware/4GL V6 and the Speedware/Designer development suite are released. They represent the next generation of Speedware products. These tools are re-engineered to run on UNIX and other operating systems and to interface with multiple DBMSs such as Oracle, Allbase, Sybase, and Informix. A windowing interface is also featured for this first time in this product.

1992

The company officially changes its name to Speedware Corporation to reflect the growing importance of the Speedware product family.

Speedware clients are located in more than twenty countries.

1993

Speedware becomes a publicly-traded corporation (TSX:SPW) with its initial share offering in November.

1994

Speedware launches a Business Intelligence (BI) division after acquiring the company InfoInnov and its product, Media, an Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) tool.

1995

Speedware releases the first version of its Web application development tool, Speedware Autobahn. Speedware Autobahn is a pioneer product for Web applications, and is quickly adopted by numerous clients who are eager to explore business opportunities over the Internet. Speedware releases a graphical, client-server version of Speedware/Designer.

1996

Speedware acquires query and reporting tool Esperant from Software AG to round out its BI offering.

1997

Speedware releases Visual Speedware, an enterprise client-server development tool that combines Speedware's robust server side technology with Microsoft's Visual Basic graphical user interface.

Speedware establishes a Professional Services organization, offering the expertise of Speedware specialists to provide custom solutions to clients on a consulting basis.

Speedware Autobahn technology begins to support wireless Internet protocols.

1999

Speedware Autobahn II is released. It includes a new GUI interface to reduce coding time and speed up application roll-out. Visual Speedware V2.0 is released with integrated Report Editor and auto-deployment features.

2000

Speedware launches MobileDev, the first wireless application development tool in the world.

Speedware becomes the first Canada-based software company to achieve the prestigious Support Center Practices certification.

2001

Speedware offers a complete line of solutions to support migration off the HP e3000 platform.

Speedware focuses BI expertise in developing analytic software solutions that specialize in healthcare and call center key performance indicators.

In conjunction with SAMS Publishing, Speedware releases Building Dynamic WAP Applications with MobileDev, the first book on wireless development.

2002

Speedware releases DBmotion, a database migration utility designed to help corporations migrate databases and applications off the HP e3000.

Speedware's expertise in migration leads HP to appoint the company a charter member of HP North America Platinum Program for e3000 Migration Solutions.

Speedware releases Speedware Autobahn II V4, which includes SpeedWeb, a component that instantly Web-enables Speedware legacy applications, thereby extending their usefulness and protecting development investment.

2003

Speedware acquires Enterprise Computer Systems Inc. (ECS), a provider of software solutions for the buidling materials distribution market.

Speedware acquires the AMXW product from Neartek Inc., enhancing its portfolio of HP e3000 migration solutions.

2004

Speedware and CORE Migration partner to offer complete migration solutions to .NET and Java for Cognos PowerHouse users.

Speedware acquires Prelude Systems, Inc., a leading provider of enterprise software solutions for the industrial distribution market.

Speedware Corporation acquires assets and launches new operating division: OpenERP Solutions.

2005

Activant Solutions Inc. acquires Speedware Corporation and all of its subsidiaries.
