AS/400 Modernization Specialist
Location: Montreal (Canada)
 

As part of the Professional Services group, you will have the opportunity to work in a dynamic and challenging environment, delivering mission critical and highly visible solutions to our clients. You will participate in the delivery of consulting projects that enable companies of all sizes, from start-ups to established blue chip giants, to convert their AS/400 legacy business applications from old platforms and technologies to contemporary system architectures and development environments.

Essential Job Functions and Tasks:

As a Modernization Specialist at Speedware, you will:

  • Maintain our existing software:
  • Explore and understand client requirements
  • Architect fully integrated solutions
  • Perform detailed code analysis
  • Document solutions and design specifications
  • Assist in scoping and estimation of effort for project work
  • Directly interface with client technical resources
  • Assist the Project Manager with technical expertise
  • Lead and mentor technical staff on project work
  • Perform hands-on technical work as needed
  • Debug and remediate technical issues
  • Perform testing of deliverables as needed
  • Assist in sales cycles from a technical perspective
  • Deliver training to clients
  • Look to the future by investigating new technologies and techniques and keeping up with ongoing industry trends
Essential Skills and Competencies:

Successful applicants need to have the following skills and competencies:

  • Languages: RPG II, RPG IV, RPG ILE
  • Screen Design Aid (SDA & PDM): Menus, Display Files, Subfile programming
  • Arrays; Data Areas; Data Structures
  • O/S: OS/400, S/36 environment on AS/400
  • AS/400 SQL
  • Job Control: S/36 OCL Procedures and CL Programming (CLP)
  • DB2/400: DDS-Physical Files, Logical Files, Join Files, Data Dictionaries
  • File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
  • Query/400 and Open Query File (OPNQRYF)
  • Development experience for commercial applications running on AS400 servers

Some experience in one or more of the following:

  • Java, Ant, Python, Eclipse, Subversion, Swing
  • C# / .NET programming experience
  • Oracle, SQL Server, SQLAnywhere, MYSQL
  • Unix, Linux, Windows
  • Distributed computing
  • TCP, HTTP, SMTP, WAP, SIP
  • XML, VSS, ASP, JSP, ADO.
  • Knowledge of other legacy computer languages (COBOL, FORTRAN, etc.)
  • Websphere, Java on AS/400, COBOL/400
  • AS/400 System administration (user profiles, authorization lists, object authority, PTFs, system values, basic configuration

Other

  • B.Sc. in Computer Science, Software Engineering or Electrical Engineering (with software minor)
  • French is an asset

Non-technical Competencies:

  • Good familiarity with configuration and source code management tools.
  • Strong communication, presentation and interpersonal skills
  • Solid organizational skills
  • Willingness to travel (typically 25-40% of the time but at times can be in excess of this over selected periods)
  • No restrictions to travel, cross borders
  • Experience in responding to RFPs
  • Proven experience in successfully delivering professional services to external clients
  • Experience and abilities in customer requirements gathering, analysis and planning phases
  • Willing and able to lead and play in uncharted territories; to be on the forefront of technology; resourceful and a fast learner
  • Can manage and work the details while keeping an eye on the big picture
  • Positive attitude, a builder, a promoter
  • Flexible and adaptable
  • English communication skills, written and oral
