As part of the development team, you will have the opportunity to work in a dynamic and challenging environment with cutting-edge products and technologies. You will participate in the design and development of a number of software products that enable companies of all sizes, from start-ups to established blue chip giants, to automatically convert their legacy business applications from old platforms and technologies to contemporary system architectures and development environments.

Our software tools are written primarily in Java and they handle everything from intelligent language/code conversion to the replacement of system primitives on the “from” platform.

As an Intermediate Java Developer at Speedware, you will be asked to:

• Maintain our existing software:
• Improve, maintain and/or test existing Java components. 
• Analyze, propose, and document a variety of solutions to current issues.
• Make enhancements to existing software by analyzing, profiling, and/or identifying areas for optimization or refactoring.
• Assess potential system impacts on performance, stability, scalability, and maintainability that could be caused by changes and feature additions to the software products.
• Help create new software:
• Participate in the design of Java software systems in accordance with specifications, reporting to the Development Lab Team Leader.
• Participate in the design and implementation of new Java components.
• Produce various development documents.
• Test the software:
• Perform unit testing and provide technical support to Speedware’s Customer Support, Quality Assurance, and Professional Services teams.
• Assist other development/support staff to troubleshoot complex software issues and providing resolution for critical and hard-to-find software defects.
• Participate in code reviews on work produced by internal or external (consultants) software designers and work closely with QA to perform test plan reviews.
• And look to the future:
• Investigate new technologies and techniques and keep up with ongoing industry developments.

Successful applicants need to have the following skills and competencies:

• Excellent knowledge of Java SE 5 + 6 and surrounding technologies (Ant, Python, Eclipse, Subversion, Swing, etc.).
• Excellence in object oriented design and development, C language and software development under various UNIX environments and distributed computing applications.
• Very good knowledge of networking protocols/comms  (TCP, HTTP, SMTP, WAP, SIP, etc.), Windows application development, including interface creation, XML technologies, VSS, ASP, JSP, ADO.
• Good familiarity with configuration and source code management tools.
• Some knowledge of legacy computer languages (COBOL, FORTRAN, RPG) would be an asset.
• B.Sc. in Computer Science, Software Engineering or Electrical Engineering (with software minor).
• A five year record of successful systems development, preferably in Java.
• French and English communication skills, written and oral
